How to Twin

Now that we know what student twinning is, the question of ‘how to do it’ arises. What should we do and what steps should we take? What approach should we adopt? Are there any obstacles and how should we tackle them?

In order to establish and maintain strong links between student associations throughout Britain, there are a number of objectives we believe need to be achieved:

- Establish a Palestine society in your university or college (if there isn’t one already) and make sure that the society/group/association is registered in the Student Union.

If one already exists, make an effort to support it, be involved and spread the message. This can be done simply by speaking to your friends and family about the actual situation, as opposed to the superficial image (or lack of image even) portrayed in the media. Regular activity, support and fundraising will mean that the society will remain a fixed part of the institution.

A well-established society will mean continued support and is important for the reputation and maintenance of links with another University.

- Find a ‘twin buddy’ i.e. an institution/University in Palestine who is wanting to twin.

Although this may seem a daunting task, be assured that all of Palestine is crying to be heard. Although students live under occupation and face various obstacles on a daily basis, they make an extra strenuous effort to be able to study and attend University. Education is their resistance. Hence, a twinning project will certainly be warmly welcomed.

There are various methods by which this can be achieved: asking around, via social media, and notably, The Britain - Palestine Twinning Network – which has been formed in order to promote twinning and friendship links between Britain and Palestine

- Lobby your student union to twin with University in Palestine

If there is resistance, i.e. individuals or groups who disagree with the twinning project, affirm your stance and channel your energy into spreading the message and raising awareness.

Our focus is student twinning. As students in the UK, we enjoy various additional privileges and do not even consider the violation of Human Rights. Basic Human Rights are not a fact for all, especially Palestinian students. Raising awareness and forming a stance against this is of utmost importance. Student Twinning is just one way of doing this.

"Twinning is about making relationships between Unis, to do that we let the students and the lecturers of the different Unis participate in the twinning. They would have ideas to raise awareness and exchange contacts to show the real image of Palestine to the world through the twinning prgramme. We can then make further people particpate in the twinning whether they are  students, lecturers or even other faculty members". - Baraa, a student from Palestine.
